The first few months set the foundation for a long, healthy life. Puppies and kittens need a series of vaccines a few weeks apart, regular parasite checks and prevention, and guidance on food, training, spay or neuter timing and more. A package keeps all of that organized, so you know what is coming at each visit and nothing gets missed.
Our team will walk you through what is included for your pet’s age and species, and we can tailor recommendations to your pet’s lifestyle, whether that means future boarding and grooming, daycare, hiking or an indoor-only life. Puppy and kitten visits are also available through our mobile vet service.
What Our Puppy and Kitten Care Covers
- Nose-to-tail exams at each visit to track growth and catch problems early.
- The core vaccine series, plus lifestyle vaccines your pet may need.
- Intestinal parasite testing and deworming guidance. Roundworms and hookworms are common in young animals, and some parasites can spread to people.
- Heartworm, flea and tick prevention started early and dosed for your pet’s weight.
- Nutrition and growth guidance as your pet grows.
- Planning for spay or neuter and microchipping.
Ask our team exactly which services and products your package includes. To help us prepare, complete the preventive care survey for puppies or kittens on our online forms page before your visit.
Puppy Vaccine Schedule: What to Expect
Our veterinarians tailor every schedule, but most puppies follow this general pattern, based on the American Animal Hospital Association’s 2022 canine vaccination guidelines:
- Distemper/parvo combination (distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus and usually parainfluenza): at least three doses given 2 to 4 weeks apart between 6 and 16 weeks of age, then a booster within a year.
- Rabies: given according to your puppy’s age and local requirements. McClure requires all pets to be current on rabies.
- Lifestyle vaccines: Bordetella (kennel cough) for dogs who will board, be groomed or attend daycare; leptospirosis, usually two doses a few weeks apart; and canine influenza or Lyme disease based on exposure risk.
Planning to board or groom later? Read vaccines needed for dog boarding and grooming so your puppy is ready when you need us. See our vaccination services for more.
Kitten Vaccine Schedule: What to Expect
Kittens also need a series of vaccines to build protection as the immunity they received from their mother fades. The 2020 AAHA/AAFP feline vaccination guidelines recommend:
- FVRCP (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia): a series given every 2 to 4 weeks until about 16 to 20 weeks of age, followed by a booster around 6 months.
- Feline leukemia (FeLV): recommended for kittens, with ongoing boosters depending on lifestyle and risk.
- Rabies: recommended for cats and required by McClure for all pets.
Indoor-only cats still need core vaccines. Our veterinarians will recommend the right plan for your kitten’s lifestyle.
Spay, Neuter, Microchip and First Groom
- Spay and neuter: timing depends on breed, size and health. As a general guide, many dogs are spayed or neutered between 6 and 12 months, and cats as early as 5 to 6 months. Surgery includes in-house pre-surgical bloodwork, IV catheter placement, continuous monitoring and pain management.
- Microchipping: we use PetLink microchips by Datamars, with lifetime registration and no annual fees. The chip is placed under the skin in seconds without sedation, and our team completes the registration.
- Puppy’s 1st Groom: for puppies under 6 months, a gentle introduction to bathing, blow-drying, nail trims and ear cleaning with our groomer, Katelyn. See grooming.
